Het patent op Viagra is verlopen, nu koop je in China ‘Gouden Dolk’

Het is misschien wel de bekendste merknaam in de farmaceutische wereld, en eerder dit jaar verliep het patent in China: Viagra is daar nu te koop als generiek - en dus goedkoop - geneesmiddel. Maar is de nepvariant ‘Gouden Dolk’ wel net zo goed als het origineel?

After a development period of more than 10 years, and with final approval from the China Food and Drug Administration, Guangzhou Baiyunshan Pharmaceutical Co. has just launched a generic erectile dysfunction drug based on Viagra, to be sold at half the price.

At the press conference for the launch of “Jinge” (literally meaning “gold dagger”), Baiyunshan deputy director Wang Wenchu couldn’t conceal his excitement when attractive young men and women appeared on the stage waving the pills at the audience. He had been waiting for this moment for 11 years.

The patent for Viagra, developed by the American company Pfizer, expired in China on May 12. Not only has it brought in over $10 billion globally for Pfizer over the past 11 years, it has also become the most iconic erectile dysfuntion drug in China.
