Pakistanese Chief of Army staff General Muhammad Zia-Ul-Haq, who leads army coup, gives a speech on Pakistan radio, 05 July 1977. Appointed Chief of Army Staff in 1976, General Zia-ul-Haq came to power after he overthrew ruling Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, after widespread civil disorder, in a bloodless military coup d'état on 05 July 1977 and imposed Martial Law. He assumed the post of President of Pakistan in 1978 which he held till his death on 17 August 1988. Prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was tried for corruption and murder, sentenced to death and executed in 1979 in spite of worldwide appeals for clemency. AFP
