De 39-jarige Filippijnse visser Ompong Vargas draagt een masker om zijn huid te beschermen tegen de zon. Hij wil niet donkerder kleuren. Want, zoals een van zijn collega-vissers zegt tegen persbureau Reuters: „We already have dark skin, we’ll be ugly if we get even darker.”

Schoonheidsbehandelingen voor mannen zijn populair in de Filippijnen, er is een bloeiende markt voor mannelijke cosmetica in de regio. Maar de vissers, die per dag ongeveer 2 tot 7 dollar verdienen, kunnen een schoonheidsbehandeling in een salon niet betalen. Daarom hebben ze dit goedkopere alternatief bedacht. Wie wél meer geld heeft, gaat naar de spa’s waar ze speciaal voor mannen behandelingen aanbieden, zoals een spuit tegen acné, voor 1,50 dollar per keer.
