Rellen in Brussel na conflict over niqaab

Police officers stand guard in front of a crowd of Muslim protesters in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek (Molenbeek-Saint-Jean), in Brussels, on June 1, 2012. On May 31 small riots broke out in Molenbeek, after a woman in niqab (veil that completely covers the face) was checked by two police officers and asked to take off her full veil, which has been illegal in Belgium for over a year. The woman was brought to a police station after her refusal to comply and she allegedly assaulted two female police officers once there, leading to tensions in the local community.
