Hongersnood in Somalië breidt zich uit

De Verenigde Naties hebben de hongersnood uitgeroepen in drie nieuwe regio’s in Somalië. Ook in een vluchtelingenkamp in de hoofdstad Mogadishu geldt nu een voedseltekort.

Daarnaast is in Middle Shabelle en Afgoye acute ondervoeding en een dermate hoog sterftecijfer vastgesteld, wat het aantal regio’s met hongersnood op vijf brengt. Vorige maand zei de VN dat twee regio’s in Somalië kampten met hongersnood.

Somalië heeft te maken met de zwaarste droogte in zestig jaar. Hulpverlening aan het land is moeilijk, omdat aan Al-Qaeda-gerelateerde militanten het voor het zeggen hebben in veel van de meest wanhopige gebieden in het land.
