In de Golf van Aden zijn 57 vluchtelingen verdronken toen hun boot kapseisde. Dit meldt het vluchtelingenbureau van de Verenigde Naties, het UNHCR.

54 Somalische vluchtelingen waren met drie smokkelaars vlakbij de kust van Jemen toen de boot door hoge golven om werd gegooid. Volgens de VN zijn inmiddels 23 lichamen geborgen.

De enige overlevende is een 42-jarige man die een zwemtocht van 23 uur naar de kust van Jemen overleefde.

Het is het grootste aantal slachtoffers met vluchtelingen in één incident, sinds januari 2008, toen 114 mensen verdronken in eenzelfde smokkeltocht.
