The White Stripes stopt ermee

De Amerikaanse band The White Stripes stopt ermee. De band, bestaande uit Jack White (zanger/gitarist) en Meg White (drums), speelden een combinatie van rock, blues en country en zijn vooral bekend van hun nummer Seven Nation Army. Het riffje van dit nummer is uitgegroeid tot een internationaal voetbalsupporterslied.

Op de website van The White Stripes, die momenteel slecht bereikbaar is, staat de volgende verklaring:

“The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.”

De band, opgericht in 1997, brak internationaal door met het derde album White Bloods Cells uit 2001 met nummers als Hotel Yorba, Dead Leaves And the Dirty Ground en Fell in Love With A Girl.

De opvolger van die plaat, Elephant, kreeg internationaal positieve recensies en verkocht nog beter. Het album, met het nummer Seven Nation Army, kreeg de Grammy voor het beste alternatieve album van het jaar 2004. Nederlandse popcritici riepen in 2003 Elephant uit tot album van het jaar.

Jack White’s platenlabel Third Man Records blijft nieuwe studio- en live-opnames van de band uitbrengen. Uit de verklaring:

“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”
