Serendipiteit 1914

Als aanvulling op de brief van Henny Homan Huizen (die schrijft dat `serendipity' al in 1961 in Webster vermeld stond, W&O 15 mei) wil ik u er graag op attenderen dat serendipity al voorkomt in Webster's New International Dictionary of the English Language van 1914 met als definitie: `the gift of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for, - a word coined by Walpole in allusion as he says in a letter of Jan. 1754 to a tale The Three Princes of Serendip, who in their travels were always discovering by chance or by sagacity, things they did not seek.'
