Why is a ship called she?
A ship is called she because there is always a great deal of bustle around her; there is usually a gang of man about. She has a waist and stays; it takes a good lot of paint to keep her good looking. It is not the initial expense that breaks you, it is the upkeep; she can be all decked out; it takes an experienced man to handle her correctly; and without a man at the helm she is absolutely uncontrollable. She shows her topsides, hides the bottom, and, when coming into port, always leads for the boys!
Op borduurlap in Museum of Costume, Bath (Juli 1879):
Jesus permit Thy glorious Name to stand, as the first effort of an infant's hand,
and while her fingers on the canvas move
Engage her tender heart to meet Thy love
Whith Thy dear children may she have a part, and write Thy name Thyself upon her haert
