Twitterende neo-nazi's in Duitsland geblokkeerd - eerste lokale censuur
Twitter heeft voor het eerst een account lokaal geblokkeerd. Tweets van een neo-nazi-account kunnen niet meer vanuit Duitsland worden gelezen, op verzoek van de Duitse autoriteiten.
In januari kondigde Twitter aan dat het mogelijk maakte om tweets per land te censureren. Dit om er voor te zorgen dat tweets of accounts die lokaal een wet overtreden, niet voor de hele wereld worden geblokkeerd. Daar is nu voor het eerst gebruik van gemaakt bij het account van Besseres Hannover, een in Duitsland verboden neo-nazistische groepering.
Twitter's chef van de juridische afdeling Alex Macgillivray:

De Neder-Saksische politie heeft Twitter per brief gevraagd het account te blokkeren. In de brief, gepubliceerd op Chilling Effects, een blog gelieerd aan Twitter, schrijven de autoriteiten hoe het de 'vermoedelijk criminele organisatie' Besseres Hannover alle contacten op sociale netwerken onmogelijk probeert te maken:
" It is disbanded, its assets are seized and all its accounts in social networks have to be closed immediately. The Public Prosecutor (State Attorney's Office) has launched an investigation on suspicion of forming a criminal association.
It is the task fo the Polizeidirektion Hannover (Hannover Police) to enforce the ban. The organisation "Besseres Hannover" uses the Twitter account besseres-hannover@hannoverticker, https://twitter.com/hannoverticker.
I ask you to close this account immediately and not to open any substitute accounts for the organisation "Besseres Hannover"."
De tweets van de organisatie zijn buiten Duitsland nog gewoon te lezen, hoewel het account vooral veel links naar het inmiddels gewiste blog twittert.

Ophef over censuur
Afgelopen januari was een hoop te doen over het besluit van Twitter om accounts of tweets per land te kunnen censureren. De site schreef toen:
"In our continuing effort to make our services available to users everywhere, if we receive a valid and properly scoped request from an authorized entity, it may be necessary to reactively withhold access to certain content in a particular country from time to time."
Al snel werden manieren om een eventuele blokkade te omzeilen bedacht. Weblog The Next Web schreef destijds bezorgd te zijn over de aankondiging van Twitter:
"While Twitter’s openness on this topic is laudable, this announcement is still worrisome. What kind of requests will the startup obey? While restrictions on neo-Nazi content are quite consensual, the same may not go for copyright lawsuits, pursuits against WikiLeaks or tentatives to silence the opposition in authoritarian regimes. Sure, the company makes it clear there are requests it won’t accept, and it’s interesting to note that it’s prepared to the idea that it may have to give up entirely on certain countries – unfortunately left unnamed. Yet, the wording Twitter uses leaves space for concern – “to attempt” and “to try” don’t fully qualify as promises."
