Dutch people consider Amsterdam their dazzling capital, but to New Yorkers the city breathes village tranquillity. Four photographers from New York worked in Amsterdam for three weeks.

Amsterdam is cultivated like a well-kept garden and it is surprisingly quiet, especially at night, according to Joshua Lutz (1975), Gus Powell (1974), Richard Rothman (1952) and Carl Wooley (1977). These four photographers were invited by Foam photografy museum and the Amsterdam city archives, in cooperation with the John Adams Institute, to portray the city in three weeks.

The exhibition currently on show in the city archive is one of the many initiatives to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of Henry Hudson's 'discovery' of Manhattan and the foundation of the New Amsterdam colony there.

All four had to stick to a theme. Powell worked on street photography, Lutz focused on the outskirts of the city, Wooley photographed by night and Rothman took pictures related to water.
