The international conference about the security of Afghanistan wil be held in the Hague, broadcaster RTL reported on Tuesday. US secretary of state Hillary Clinton had asked the Netherlands to host a ministerial-level conference on Afghanistan as early as March 31.

Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen had already accepted the request, but there was a discussion about whether to host the event in the southern city of Maastricht or in the government seat The Hague. Jozias van Aartsen, a former foreign minister and now the mayor of The Hague, pulled the conference to his city and has already made sure 2,000 hotel rooms are available, according to RTL.

UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon will open the conference where more than 75 nations involved with Afghanistan are invited to discuss the war-torn country's future. Hillary Clinton last week invited Iran to attend the conference. The Obama administration, in a dramatic shift from the Bush administration policy, has indicated it wants to consult with Iran on a number of issues.
